A Cabin in the Snow
On a whim I decided that something had to be done about the lack of winter weather in town. A little research and a fair amount of money later I’d booked a cabin in the Cascades for the weekend. Good friends were able to join us for feasting, playing in the white stuff, and mesmerized viewing of the Planet Earth series. Dinner on Saturday was tofu and kale, sauteed mushrooms, salmon, bread and cheese and wine, all prepared in a well-appointed little kitchen. Blueberry muffins and cookies were crowd pleasers as well. The little cafe down the road did a nice job with breakfast, even though they somehow managed to mangle each of our orders in some way. Apparently the consolation prize for no eggs in your breakfast burrito is an entire complimentary blackberry pie to go. Not bad. We sat in the hot tub, played games and watched a herd of elk stroll through the back yard and graze on the low cedar branches Sunday morning.
I meant to get more knitting done. It didn’t happen. Some very satisfying sloth took place instead.
This is what a happy dog looks like:
She’ll chase snowballs like they’re tennis balls and never get tired of the game. It makes it easy to keep her entertained in the snow. We took a brief hike/slog out to the pond in the back and watched her make a four footed leap into the drink in pursuit of a seriously pissed goose. The goose escaped, and the dog eventually dried out.
It was good to get out of the city for a bit, but it’s also good to be back. Tomorrow will return to the regular routine but hopefully we’ll go up to visit the snow at least once more before the end of the season.
